While Tanzania is a very important trade partner, the long-running spat is yet to be resolved.

Data from the Central Bank of Kenya shows that Kenyan exports to the East African region fell to Sh89.25 billion in eight months through August compared to Sh93.86 billion in a similar period last year.

Exports to Tanzania posted the biggest drop in value at Sh15.66 billion compared to Sh18.12 billion last year.

Among the products that have been restricted from the Tanzanian market include milk and dairy products , and cigarettes.

The thinning order book from Tanzania saw the value of Kenyan exports to neighbouring countries fall by Sh4.62 billion in eight months. In 2016, the value of exports during the same period was Sh93.86 billion.

It is time Kenya raised business with friendly neighbouring states since it has proved to be unreliable.

The dream of East African integration won’t be achieved if some members of the bloc continue pulling in different directions and placing hurdles that hamper trade in the region.
