Reports that manufacturers of generic Aids drugs are set to start producing pills for Africa containing state of the art medicine that is used in the West is welcome news for the continent.

The current high cost of the life-prolonging drugs has been blamed for slowing down efforts to tackle the disease in Africa.

The multimillion dollar guarantee that generic drug makers have secured will  now see the prices capped at Sh7,747 ($75) per patient a year, which translates to Sh645 per month.

Ensuring that patients in Africa get similar medicines like their Western counterparts is a welcome development that will help in the war against the disease.

It goes against moral human principles to have one part of the world get access to good medicines, while another segment is left to struggle. The new initiative therefore is not only long overdue but will go a long way in supplementing the campaign to eradicate the disease.
