What you need to know:

  • MPs have vowed to overturn a gazette notice published by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), which abolished several  perks.
  • It is shocking to learn that polygamous MPs are now demanding unlimited medical cover for all their spouses and children, all at the taxpayers’ expense.

Our MPs just never cease to amaze. Merely weeks after being sworn-in, members of the 12th Parliament are exhibiting the same greedy traits that Kenyans thought had been tamed.

It is shocking to learn that polygamous MPs are now demanding unlimited medical cover  for all their spouses and children, all at the taxpayers’ expense.

They have also vowed to overturn a gazette notice published by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), which abolished several  perks.

The SRC had in July published a gazette notice that slashed salaries of MPs from Sh710,000 to Sh621,000. It also abolished the Sh5 million car grant, weekly mileage allowance and plenary sitting allowance that the 11th Parliament enjoyed.

This is in line with the government’s commitment to tame the rising public sector wage bill that has proved to be untenable.

We opine that MPs must respect taxpayers and the law. There is no employer who offers unlimited medical cover, hence they cannot and should not think that they can be the exception.

Their bid to overturn the salary caps is also illegal and should not see the light of day.

Greedy legislators are notorious for holding the government and Kenyans hostage by threatening to stall budgets and related legislation if their pockets are not filled with public money.

That rabid culture of avarice must be eradicated if we are to successfully meet our development goals.

That cannot be possible if legislators who are supposed to be good examples for other Kenyans are notoriously eyeing public funds for personal use.

We urge the government not to bend to their demands and ensure that the gazette notice is fully implemented without any changes.
