EDITORIAL: Punish errant managers

There is need to speed up Uchumi Supermarkets' rescue plan. FILE PHOTO | NMG

It is indeed a great shame to see the great depths Uchumi Supermarkets has sunk.

There is need to speed up the supermarket’s rescue plan, but those who brought it down must be brought to book.

The sight of empty shelves at the retailer’s outlets are not only shocking, but it just goes to show the great work that lies ahead in trying to resuscitate it. The fact , however, remains that those individuals behind the supermarket’s collapse have not been brought to account.

We need to see the culprits prosecuted and surcharged for the massive losses.

It can no longer be business as usual if we allow such people to go scot free. The genesis of the supermarket’s problems is well documented in the public domain, but there has been no keenness to follow through with appropriate measures.

Pumping billions of shillings of taxpayers’ funds into the company will not revive it if proper structures are not put in place.

Employees want their salaries, suppliers need their money for goods delivered while banks want loans repaid.  These must be sorted out without fail. The fact remains that the institution still has great potential in the local retail sector.
