EDITORIAL: Respect public institutions

Despite several appeals to stop playing politics with the Judiciary and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, our politicians are yet to learn.

Both sides of the political divide must avoid weakening these independent public institutions by making all manner of wild and unsubstantiated allegations.

Playing to the public gallery by making baseless allegations in order to score political points over their rivals is not the way to go.

When members of the public listen to their leaders demonising these institutions, they believe that whatever is being alleged is the gospel truth.

Time has come for the country to entrench a culture of evidence-based criticism and not  claims that are counterproductive.

As we head to next month’s repeat presidential poll, we urge politicians to avoid stoking the embers by raising tensions. It is only recently that Western  envoys warned Kenyans to reject fake news aimed at inciting violence.

These constitutional bodies should be respected by all.
