The recommendations by the committee formed by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on rehabilitation of defective runways, installing new backup generators and replacing aged and faulty screening equipment at Kenya’s biggest airports, should be considered for implementation.

Kenyan airports have the potential to fuel economic growth, create jobs, and facilitate international trade and tourism. However, this can only happen if the facilities are world-class, not as it is currently where the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Wilson Airport and the Moi International Airport have rusted and leaking roofs, unreliable power backup systems among other many challenges.

The team also asked the government to hire personnel in the engineering department to meet staffing woes. Kenya has enough unemployed engineering graduates who can be hired and trained to work in these airports.

These recommendations are key in increasing Kenya's connections to the global air transport network.
