Four hundred heads of cattle have been slaughtered in Lamu in a destocking programme due to drought.

The exercise which is funded by the European Union (EU) was conducted by the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) in partnership with the Lamu government and targeted all areas affected by the ravaging drought.

The exercise targets at least 1,000 cows to be slaughtered by the end of all the phases.

The programme involves purchasing cows from herders after which they are slaughtered and the meat distributed freely to residents affected by drought.

The exercise also intends to ferry 5,000 cows affected by drought from Lamu to the Galana-Kulalu Ranch in Kilifi County for nourishment and improvement after which they will be handed over back to the owners once the drought is over.
