Facebook has partnered with TechCrunch, an American technology news site, to find the most promising African start-up in a competition that climaxes on Wednesday in Nairobi.

The TechCrunch Startup Battlefield will see 15 companies from sub-Saharan Africa pitch their ideas with the goal of winning Sh2.6 million ($25,000) in non-equity funding.

The pitching event, which will be streamed live on the TechCrunch website, will also provide the start-ups with exposure to a wider pool of potential investors and customers.

“The whole aim is to continue the narrative, to bring the eyes of the world to see what is happening in the region,” said Mr Emeka Afigbo, Facebook’s head of platform partnerships, Middle East and Africa.

Applications for the competition closed in July 2017 and Mr Afigbo said that over 1,000 companies submitted applications to participate.

However, only 15 have been shortlisted for the pitching event on Wednesday.
