The owners of bottling firm Aquamist are behind the building of Kenya’s second airport hotel to be operated by US hospitality chain Marriott, regulatory filings have shown.

The Premji family are among the owners of the upcoming Four Points by Sheraton located inside Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, set to open on October 1, 2017.

They control 33.3 per cent of the multi-billion shilling hotel development through an entity dubbed Kanari Ltd. Other owners of the hotel are the Mehta family through Bluesky Investments Ltd (33.3 per cent), and Airstar Ltd (33.3 per cent).

The 172-room Sheraton Nairobi Hotel JKIA also features five conference rooms targeting business meetings, coffee shop, 24-hour restaurant, a rooftop bar and grill, gym, jacuzzi and spa.

Karim Premji, chief executive at Aquamist, could not comment on this story by the time of going to press, saying he was on an overseas trip.

It will be Kenya’s second airport hotel after the 144-room Lazizi Premiere Hotel which opened last month.

The Premji family are also owners of the newly-rebranded Four Points by Sheraton, Hurlingham, which previously operated under the Best Western brand.

Starwood Hotels formerly owned the Four Points by Sheraton brands, but Marriott acquired the hotel chain in 2015, making it a subsidiary.

“Whether our guests are on a stopover for business using their time to connect with clients or leisure travellers wanting a respite from their East African adventures; the hotel is focused around the international traveller and giving them exactly what they need,” said Vivek Mathur, general manager for Sheraton hotels in Kenya.

“With the current robust GDP growth and steady increase in international arrivals both on the business traveller and leisure traveller front, we expect this to remain a sound investment with strategic growth opportunities,” said Mr Mathur who oversees both Hurlingham and the upcoming airport units.

Airport hotels target transiting passengers, airline crews, and business executives on the go. They also profit from events such as flight delays, reschedules or cancelled journeys which at times force airlines to offer accommodation to distraught passengers.
