Barclays Bank of Kenya (BBK) #ticker:BBK has started closing some of its branches in Nairobi in line with an earlier announced plan to merge seven of its units countrywide starting October 1.

The bank on Thursday sent alerts to customers explaining the closures while giving them alternative branches that will offer them services.

Haile Selassie branch operations will, for instance, be transferred to Harambee Avenue branch according to one of the alerts.

“Moi Avenue branch operations will be transferred to Queensway branch effective Sunday October 1. You can also do your banking via our mobile and online banking platforms or at any post office countrywide,” read the alert.

Barclays in July announced the plan to close the branches as a cost-cutting measure.

BBK Marketing Manager Anne Nderi said the closures would “optimise” branch networks.

The closures will also affect Waiyaki Way, Kawangware and Rahimtulla branches; a unit in Meru and another in Wundanyi. Barclays in July ran the branch optimisation programme parallel to its voluntary exit scheme, which saw 130 workers exit with a one month salary for every-year-worked offer.
