Four university students are among five winners of Sh600,000 prizes in this year’s NSE Investment Challenge.

The top winner was Joseph Munyao from Kenyatta University, City campus. He received Sh300,000 cash prize.
Winners are required to invest the cash prizes at the bourse.

The NSE said the challenge recorded 1,968 entries from the general public and close to 10,000 from students. The competition ran for three months from May to July.

Lack of mentorship and exposure on what exactly happens at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) has led young investors to make ill-informed investment decisions, judges in the competition observed.

“The reasons for investing were not adequate. Most participants did not give reasons for investing. We felt that if students had mentors they would have exposure of what exactly happens in the industry and would have made better investment decisions,” said Lucy Muthoni, one of the judges.

The challenge is an edutainment initiative targeting youth in tertiary institutions.
