Garissa University College will today be granted a charter by President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House to become the first fully-fledged university in northern Kenya.
Mr Kenyatta made the announcement during a campaign rally in Garissa. The institution will add to the list of 31 public universities with charters.
Mr Kenyatta said the charter award to the institution, which was attacked by terrorists in 2015 leaving 148 dead, will be done in Nairobi due to the prevailing political situation.
“I had promised to come here and award the charter to this university to show solidarity, but due to prevailing political situation I will sign the document in Nairobi,” said Mr Kenyatta.

The delay in the award of the charter was attributed to a land ownership row raised by the Commission for University Education (CUE).
While issuing charter to seven universities in October last year, President Kenyatta asked the institutions to maintain high standards of research teaching, and management.
“If you let your standards fall, then you have failed your students and your country,” he said then.
