Numerous firms, including a statutory body in Uganda, risk losing goods worth millions of shillings at the port of Mombasa to a planned auction on January 3 if not collected in a month.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) said the consignments, which have been lying at the Customs warehouse for more than a month, will be made available for viewing by interested buyers on December 28 and 29.

“Notice is given that unless the undermentioned goods are entered and removed from the custody of the Customs Warehouse Keeper, Kilindini within 30 days of this notice, they will be sold by public auction on January 3, 2018,” the Customs and Border Control department said in a gazette Notice last Friday.

The commissioner, under law, may allow goods imported by the governments of EAC states, diplomatic missions or aid agencies to stay at the port beyond a month.

Among the goods which may be auctioned include 430 packages of surgical gloves imported by National Medical Stores of Uganda – a statutory body that procures, stores and distributes medicines, medical supplies and vaccines to public health facilities.

Other firms whose goods have overstayed at the customs’ warehouse include Steel Rolling Mills Ltd of Kampala, Metro Plastics Kenya Ltd of Nairobi and General Plastics Ltd based in Nairobi’s Industrial Area.
