Kenyan property listings on vacation rental site Airbnb jumped 57 per cent to 5,900 in the year to September, reflecting the site’s growing popularity and increased travel by millennials.
Data from the US firm further shows that there were 39,500 guests hosted in Kenyan properties in the year to September, a 143 per cent jump from a similar period last year. A typical Kenyan host earned Sh100,637 ($970) per year from renting out their home, the data shows.
Households renting out their homes on Airbnb earned a total Sh40.5 million ($3.9 million).
“The collective earnings from hosting on Airbnb for Kenyans increased by 106 (per cent) compared to the previous year,” says Airbnb in a statistical release.

The figures for Tanzania indicate that Airbnb has not picked up as well in Kenya’s southern neighbour, with only 2,300 listed homes. Despite this, hosts in the country were earning Sh103,750 ($1,000), slightly more than their Kenyan counterparts per year.
South Africa is, expectedly, the largest Airbnb market in the continent. The country had 42,400 active listings by September and had recorded 651,000 inbound guests in the past year. A typical host in the country earned Sh197,125 per year.
