Naivas Supermarkets has opened its latest outlet on Kiambu Road, aiming to tap the growing population in the area.

The family-owned retailer opened the doors of its newest branch at Ciata Mall (opposite Nakumatt Ridgeways), bringing its countrywide branch count to 41.

Willy Kimani, retail chain’s chief operating officer, said the location of the branch, which will dedicate 40 per cent of its supplies to fresh foods, is ideal given the few competitors in the area.

“This market is highly underserved. We only have two other retailers along the road — Nakumatt opposite us and Quick Mart, which has an outlet at Thindigua,” he said in an interview.

“We have deployed a new concept for this new outlet, with a good portion of the goods on offer being fresh products and a well-stocked vegetables and bakery section.”

Nakumatt, the region’s largest retailer, and Uchumi have come under severe financial strain that has even seen their shelves go empty as supplier debts mount.

Uchumi was initially scheduled to be the anchor tenant at the Ciata Mall, but the space has now been taken over by Naivas.
