The government has moved in to take over prime Telkom Kenya land on Ngong Road which it plans to allocate to informal business owners.
In a gazette notice published on Friday, the National Land Commission (NLC) on behalf of the Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs says that it intends to acquire 79 acres of land registered under Telkom Kenya Limited.
The NLC chairman Muhammad Swazuri said the ministry intends to set up Jua Kali operations on the land.
“In pursuance of sections 112 and 162 (2) of the Land Act No. 6 of 2012, the National Land Commission on behalf of Ministry of Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs gives notice that the Government intends to acquire the following parcel of land for informal sector ‘Jua Kali’ operations in Nairobi County,” said Mr Swazuri.
The land is projected to fetch Telkom Kenya billions of shillings going by the latest land prices in the Ngong Road area.
Land price index by property management firm Hass Consult shows that an acre of land on Ngong Road costs up to Sh57 million. Going by this price, Telkom will make roughly Sh4.5 billion.
Telkom Kenya while acknowledging the gazette notice said the firm is aware of the government’s intention.
“The National Government has gazetted its intention to compulsorily acquire a 79 acre piece of land, along Ngong Road, Nairobi, belonging to Telkom, for the establishment of the informal Jua Kali sector operations in Nairobi County,” said Telkom in a statement.
