There once was a farmer who grew award-winning corn. Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won the highest-ranking award.

One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbours.

“How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbours when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” the reporter asked.

“Why Sir,” said the farmer, “Didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbours grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn.

If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbours grow good corn.” He is very much aware of the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbour’s corn also improves.

So, it is with our lives. Those who choose to live in peace must help their neighbours to live in peace. Those who choose to live well must help others to live well, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches.

And those who choose to be happy must help others to find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all.

Tips to stay on top:

Competition & Innovation are interwoven: You can’t look at the competition and say you are going to do it better.

You have to look at the competition and say you are going to do it differently (Steve Jobs). Competition makes you constantly innovate. Innovation is incredibly important for businesses to flourish.

When you are winning, keep competing like you are losing: There’s often a thin line between winning and losing. Don’t let complacency of success creep in.

Success can often put you in a comfort zone, get out of your comfort zone, give yourself more reasons to stay stronger in competition and keep competing.

Be Decisive. A wrong decision is usually less disastrous than indecision: Decisions don’t have to be big and forever.

Decisions are what sometimes the smallest ones, but those that have the power to change your status. Making hard decisions is tough but it is important for you to be decisive and make decisions at the right time.

The true competitors are the ones who always play to win (Tom Brady): Know your strengths & your weakness, know what works for you & what does not. Never give up your game even if you see temporary setbacks. Play for winning in the long run.

If you are persistent, you will get it. If you are consistent, you will keep it: Magic happens when you do not give up even though you want to.

Be patient, persistent and consistent. After all, isn’t it true that life is sometimes about risking everything for a dream that no one can see but you.
