South Africa-made alcoholic cream Amarula has won the 2017 Global Brand-of-the-Year award after beating 2,800 competitors to the coveted crown.

Amarula took the top spot after it received the highest number of votes in the alcoholic spirits category in the contest that was determined by 135,000 consumers who voted for the brands drawn from 35 countries.

It was feted at a gala event held at London’s Kensington Palace in the UK. The alcoholic brand, which is distributed in Kenya by Kenya Wine Agencies (KWAL) was recognised for its top brand valuation, consumer market research and public online voting.

“Conserving and protecting Africa’s natural wildlife through the Amarula Trust initiative brought us honour and recognition globally,” said Amarula global marketing manager Maijaliina Hansen.

The Amarula Trust’s #DontLetThemDisappear” campaign helped raise global awareness on the dangers of poaching. Amarula produced a limited edition of its bottles without the iconic African Elephant helping to drive anti-ivory trade message home.

KWAL marketing manager Christine Ethangatta said the award had confirmed Amarula’s global status as a premium beverage.

“This award recognises the brand presence in Africa and in African hearts while opening up Africa liquor brands to the world,” she said.

The World Branding Awards is the premier awards of the World Branding Forum.
