A local investment group has announced plans to pilot a commercial public transport service using an Uber-like service for high end areas.

Sure Corporation chairman Dr Ken Kaduki said they had procured buses for the month-long pilot that will ply high-end residential areas currently not served by matatus to gauge the market before determining routes that require the services.

The service dubbed Safiri Express has been mooted after a year-long feasibility study that showed areas considered affluent lacked public transport, albeit charged at a much higher fee.

Safiri Express chief executive Zulekha Mwanzi said their branded buses will initially ply the NHC Lang’ata to Karen and Nyayo Embakasi routes.

“Our Safiri Express App, allows a commuter to plan their journey from the comfort of their houses or offices and pay upfront to reserve a seat from their mobile wallet. Once you book, you will receive an alert five minutes before the bus arrives at your preferred pickup point,” she said.

Ms Zulekha said the investors had set aside Sh30 million for the project that they saywill restore order in the highly lucrative public transport.

“We have a class of people that would prefer to ride executive buses and pay a premium price for the service,” she said.
