At least 20 students have graduated from Base Titanium’s apprentice programme.

The students had gone through a three-year diploma course at Technical University of Mombasa (TUM).

In its apprentice programme Base Titanium offers graduates an on-the-job training, after which they are either absorbed or let go to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony at Baobab Beach Resort and Spa  last week TUM vice-chancellor Laila Abubakar cited a lack of technical skills and work experience as a major problem in securing jobs.

“A lot still needs to be done to create innovative ways to provide skills to youth and ensure they are ready for the job market,” she said.

However, Prof Abubakar urged the graduates to look beyond being job seekers but instead create employment. She called on other companies to emulate the model used by Base Titanium to increase the number of competent graduates in the job market.
