Diaspora remittances (2004-2017)

The Central Bank of Kenya conducts a survey on remittance inflows -- money sent by Kenyans abroad -- every month through formal channels that include commercial banks and other authorised international remittances service providers in Kenya.

In May 2017, the inflows from abroad peaked at an all-time monthly high of $161.5 million (Sh16.6 billion).

Remittances are Kenya’s largest source of foreign exchange, ahead of tea, horticulture and tourism.

The healthy inflows have provided a buffer for the shilling in 2017
