Tourism earnings, while on a general upward trend over the years, has been stymied by post-election unrest (2008) that resulted in countries issuing advisories against travelling to Kenya.

Insecurity arising from terror attacks in some parts of the country, has also helped to reduce visitor numbers, and consequently, reduced earnings.

Earnings in 2010 and 2011 went up by 17.9 per cent as result of political stability, improved security, promotion in new markets (Asia) and introduction of the Brand Kenya marketing initiative.
