Parliament has begun the construction of a Sh110 million tunnel to boost MPs’ security.
The Chinese firm hired to undertake the works started digging the tunnel Monday after closing one section of the dual carriageway that runs from Uhuru Highway to Parliament-Harambee Avenue roundabout.
The entire road is expected to be closed to traffic as the construction progresses.
The tunnel, which is expected to be completed by May, will link Parliament with County Hall and the MPs’ new Sh5.8 billion office block across the road.
Parliamentary Service Commission, the MPs’ employer, says the tunnel was one of the measures undertaken by Parliament to reduce traffic in the area when the 27-storey office block is complete.
“The tunnel is mainly meant for access of vehicles to the basement parking in the building under construction,” said PSC secretary Jeremiah Nyegenye in an earlier interview. The office block, when completed, will provide parking for 400 vehicles.
MPs have on several occasions complained of being accosted by their supporters and strangers outside Parliament for financial and other assistance.
Two weeks ago, City Hall notified the public about the expected disruption of traffic on Harambee Avenue during the construction.
