Jubilee to take half of National Assembly nomination slots

Jubilee Party is set to take half of the nomination slots in the National Assembly after securing 165 members out of 349.

Jubilee will also have the lion’s share of the 18 slots reserved for women, youth and persons with disabilities in the Senate.

Jubilee Party will take six of the 12 nomination slots in the National Assembly while the other half will go to the Opposition National Super Alliance (Nasa), which is composed of five political parties.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Wiper Democratic Party (WDP), Amani National Congress (ANC), Ford Kenya (FK) and Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) form Nasa.

In the last Parliament, Jubilee controlled the majority (222 MPs) against Cord’s 133 MPs after signing a post-election coalition agreements with other five parties.

The Cord coalition (now Nasa) had four nomination slots while TNA and URP (now Jubilee) controlled six. UDF and FK each got a slot in the 11th Parliament.

In the just ended polls, Jubilee won 165 seats compared to Nasa’s 118, cementing its dominance that its needs to push through its legislative agenda.

Other fringe parties affiliated to Jubilee brought in 53 while Independents secured 13 seats.

Article 97 (c) of the Constitution requires political parties to nominate 12 members according to their proportion of members of the National Assembly to represent special interests including the youth, persons with disabilities and workers.

Equally, Article 98 of the Constitution requires political parties to nominate 16 women according to the proportion of members of the Senate elected.

They are also required to nominate one man and one woman, representing the youth, one man and one woman representing persons with disabilities.

According to the formula spelt out in law, ODM will take three while WDM, ANC and FK will get one seat each.
