What you need to know:

  • A total of 2.082 million Kenyans had filed their tax returns a day before the June 30 deadline set by taxman.
  • This is compared with the 1.1 million Kenyans who filed their returns within the same period in 2016.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) will not be extending the period for filling tax returns beyond midnight of June 30.

Judith Njagi, Chief Manager Taxpayer Services Nairobi region said on Friday that it will be unfortunate for Kenyans who failed to meet the deadline as the law requires every Kenyan to file their tax returns within the stipulated deadline.

“The law says that due date for filling tax returns is June 30th. Any Kenyan who wants an extension should have done so in writing to KRA back then not now,” she said.

A total of 2.082 million Kenyans had filed their tax returns a day before the June 30 deadline set by taxman.

This is compared with the 1.1 million Kenyans who filed their returns within the same period in 2016.

On a daily basis, KRA has been processing 90,000 filings and they estimate the figure will hit over 160,000 returns per day as the deadline comes to a close at midnight.

The taxman early May raised the penalty for late filing of returns to Sh20,000 up from Sh1,000.
