Veteran politician Kenneth Matiba is back in court to seek an additional Sh234 million from taxpayers to settle his legal bill for the suit that awarded him Sh1 billion in damages for his unlawful detention in the early 1990s and collapsed business empire.
Lawyer John Mburu on Wednesday filed a bill of costs for Sh234, 614,128 and will now appear before the registrar of the High Court on November 15 for a review of the legal fees.
Mr Matiba, through the lawyer, says the legal costs should be met by the government after the courts ruled that the State was culpable for his detention.
The 85-year-old former Kiharu MP, who suffered a stroke in jail, was awarded Sh945 million for his unlawful detention in the early 1990s and collapsed business empire as well as interest dating from when the suit was filed in 2014.
His lawyers say the compensation due to Matiba has risen to Sh1.5 billion on interest payment.
This means that taxpayers will be set back Sh1.73 billion should the courts agree that the government bear the legal costs. Justice Isaac Lenaola awarded Matiba 20 per cent of the Sh4, 726,332,042 for loss of business, putting the compensation at Sh885 million.
