Number of non-aligned MPs rises five times to 20

The number of independent MPs in the National Assembly has increased five times to 20 loosening the stranglehold of the dominant political parties Jubilee and Nasa.

The 11th Parliament had only four independent MPs, namely Wesley Korir (Cherangany), Patrick Musimba (Kibwezi West), John Serut (Mt Elgon), and Buuri’s Gatobu Kinoti.

Independent MPs bear no political party affiliations and are at liberty to support any side they wish during House business. The four who served in the past Parliament aligned themselves with the ruling Jubilee coalition.

Mzalendo Trust, a pro-democracy lobby monitoring parliamentary activities, found the performance of the independent MPs between average and below average.

The majority of the new independent MPs vied after losing during the party primaries that were marred with instances of vote rigging.

They include William Chepkut, a former aide to the late Cabinet minister Nicholas Biwott managed to floor Justice and Legal Affairs Committee departmental chairman Samuel Chepkonga in Anabkoi.

Ex-journalist Mohamed Ali clinched the Nyali seat after quitting ODM, citing irregularities in primaries.
