FKE executive director Jacqueline Mugo said many businesses have closed shop while some have incurred heavy losses, as hundreds of workers continue to lose their jobs.
She said it was highly regrettable that these alarming are occurring at a time when the country’s economic outlook was at its best.
The current political uncertainty in the country has taken a huge toll on the labour sector, the Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) has said.
FKE executive director Jacqueline Mugo said many businesses have closed shop while some have incurred heavy losses, as hundreds of workers continue to lose their jobs.
“We do not have the actual number of jobs that have been lost so far; however, we have continued to receive reports from various companies and members who are distressed and are having to make decision on job cuts,” she said.
Speaking in Nairobi on Monday, Ms Mugo said a speedy resolution to the current stalemate is urgently needed to save the country from plunging into total chaos and anarchy.
She said it was highly regrettable that these alarming events are occurring at a time when the country’s economic outlook was at its best.
“The once robust economy is now sluggish. The GDP growth projection has now been downgraded to 5 per cent and is bound to keep sliding down given the protracted electioneering period we continue to face.
“We simply cannot continue on this path as we risk the country into a failed state. No one wins in this scenario,” she said.
