Mr Kenyatta said pushing the date would interfere with the academic cycle in the coming year.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has said fresh presidential election must be held on October 17 even as his party rejected a team assembled by the electoral agency for the purpose.
Mr Kenyatta appeared to be reading from the same script with his Education secretary and acting Internal Security minister, Dr Fred Matiang’i who has maintained that the chosen poll date would allow schools to operate within the normal calendar.
While addressing religious leaders at State House on Wednesday, Mr Kenyatta said pushing the date would interfere with the academic cycle in the coming year.
He also met international diplomats with whom he shared concerns about the electoral process in the country.
The National Super Alliance (Nasa) however is calling on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to pick another date that is agreeable to all parties for the repeat presidential election.
Nasa co-principal Musalia Mudavadi said the IEBC must engage all the parties to avoid situations that may portray it as concealing information or favouring one side in the contest.
“We are ready for the meeting with the IEBC. The earlier one (meeting) they had called was cancelled because our schedule was very tight. But the IEBC must be reminded that it has to be above board as a neutral arbiter. It must get it right,” Mr Mudavadi said.
ODM chairman John Mbadi said Nasa was ready for the election but “things must be seen to be done the right way”.
“The gazette notice issued by the commission on when the next election should be held is not cast in stone... there is nowhere in law it is written that the gazetted date shall be final,” Mr Mbadi said.
On Tuesday, the electoral commission chairman Wafula Chebukati gazetted October 17, 2017 as the date for the repeat of the presidential election just six days after the Supreme Court annulled the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta at the August General Election held on August 8.
