  • Masinde Muliro University VC Frederick Otieno said investigations being conducted by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission into allegations of abuse of office and financial misappropriation at the institution were a campaign by cartels to damage his reputation.

Masinde Muliro University vice-chancellor Frederick Otieno on Monday accused the anti-corruption commission of engaging in a witch-hunt campaign against him.

He said investigations being conducted by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) into allegations of abuse of office and financial misappropriation at the institution were a campaign by cartels to damage his reputation.

“Over the past 12 months or so I have been falsely accused of crimes I have never and can never do. It is absurd for the EACC to take over 12 months on general and wild allegations and not be specific. This is pure witch hunt,” he said.

Prof Otieno said the cartels were scheming to have him removed from office by portraying him as corrupt.

Auditor-General Edward Ouko has accused the Kakamega-based institution of having entered into huge illegal contract variations, irregular procurement, failing to present cash books for audit and keeping cash unbanked and unaccounted for contrary to proper accounting procedures.

The irregular expenditure amounted to Sh362 million in the year to June 2016.
