Businessman Jimi Wanjigi yesterday made a rare public speech on the 72-hour siege on his palatial home in Muthaiga, Nairobi, revealing secret dealings between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Addressing the media at his home in the company of National Super Alliance (Nasa) leaders, Mr Wanjigi said he is an “innocent Kenyan” being harassed by the State.

“This current regime of Uhuru Kenyatta knows my home. It is a home they have visited and shared meals with my family. In fact, their government was formed in this home,” Mr Wanjigi said.

“In the last general election in 2013, it is in this home that Baba (Mr Odinga) agreed to come to shake hands with Uhuru Kenyatta after the Supreme Court had upheld his election,” he said.

“It is here that a peace direction was accepted and a progress forward to Uhuru’s own acceptance of leadership in 2013. It is in this same home that the same regime has come to desecrate.” Mr Odinga echoed the sentiments.

“Jimi Wanjigi is no stranger to President Uhuru Kenyatta. I’ve been with Uhuru Kenyatta in this residence. And we had a very long discussion with him here hosted by Jimi Wanjigi in this residence,” said Mr Odinga.

Mr Wanjigi was a wanted man since Monday until his lawyers rushed to court on Tuesday and secured an anticipatory bail barring police from arresting him. He accused the police of disregarding the law.

“To them the law is irrelevant,” Mr Wanjigi said.

Mr Odinga said police had for some time prevented him from leaving the house, during which they claimed they were acting on “orders from above.”

In their search, police said they found an M4 — a military-grade rifle — five pistols and a shotgun. But Mr Wanjigi said the weapons “are all licensed guns.” Police left Mr Wanjigi’s house Wednesday morning.

Mr Wanjigi has been a key financier and strategist for Nasa. He was Jubilee’s main sponsor in 2013.
