Listed automotive and engineering products seller, Car & General (C&G) has changed its name to Cummins Car & General after inking a joint venture deal with US-based manufacturer, Cummins.

The 50/50 joint distribution deal which takes effect in April will see diesel engines, turbochargers, alternators and generators made by Cummins sold and serviced by the new company across East Africa.

Car & General managing director Vijay Gidoomals welcomed the partnership saying it will help them explore new markets as well as solidify their current market presence with sales and aftersales services.

“Car & General has been the sole Cummins’ dealer for Genset products in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda where we control 15 per cent of the market. We also perfected our skills and have a vibrant sales and servicer team for the full range of Cummins products,” he said.

Cummins Africa Middle East managing director Gino Butera described the deal as a win-win venture where C&G presented a wide distribution network while Cummins had a strong brand that had been tested in the market for the past decade.

However, none of the parties provided cash details of the joint venture on Cummins usage of C&G’s distribution network or the investment input into the venture.

Cummins manufactures diesel engines, turbochargers, alternators and generators.
