The search for top science and technology champions for the Next Einstein Forum (NEF) has started, targeting one representative from each African country.

The 54 science and technology ambassadors will join the NEF fellows class as part of the NEF’s community of scientists.

The NEF connects science, society and policymakers in Africa and the rest of the world to leverage science for human development.

Launched in 2013, the NEF is an initiative of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in partnership with Robert Bosch Stiftung.

The ambassadors selected will attend the second edition of the NEF Global Gathering, the platform’s signature event slated for March 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda where they will engage with emerging and world renowned scientists and technology leaders as well as policymakers. The event will focus on how science and technology can solve global challenges, boost sustainable growth and accelerate human development.

Evelyn Gitau, a cellular immunology researcher at the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Programme, was the Kenyan fellow in the class of 2016.

NEF chairperson Thierry Zomahoun said the ambassadors, who are part of the NEF community of scientists, bring on board a fresh, local perspective, in addition to their growing expertise in science and technology.

“NEF ambassadors will represent their countries and the continent on a global stage, championing science-driven growth and development,” said Mr Zomahoun who is also the president and chief executive AIMS.

Among requirements to be selected a NEF ambassador is that one should be a resident of an African country, aged under 42, have completed advanced studies in science, technology with significant entrepreneurial achievements. One should also have a track record of leadership in one’s community, be passionate about promoting science and technology, and have an active online profile and following.

“NEF ambassadors drive the NEF’s local public engagement activities while growing their own careers through the NEF’s partnerships that offer opportunities for mentorship and collaborations with established researchers,” said Dr Youssef Travaly, the NEF director of programmes and content.
