Phone maker Tecno has partnered with destination marketing company Saffir Africa to offer a 15-hour railway trip from Nairobi to the Kenyan coast on the RVR train.
The 530km trip dubbed ‘Saffir Lunatic Express’ will have influential online personalities including photographers and videographers and is targeted at popularising Tecno’s new devices.

Three weeks ago, Tecno unveiled in Africa the Camon CX and CX Air for which it has been running an online campaign #GloUpWithCX.

The Saffir Lunatic Express trip will be topped up by two days at the Distant Relatives Eco Lodge in Kilifi in a drive that will promote the #GloUpWithCX campaign and tourism destinations at the coast.

The trip which is coming months before the old train is replaced with the new seeks to have 30 young professionals onboard take photos and video clips to serve as a window into the country’s history.

Tecno marketing manager Ray Hou said Camon CX is the phone maker’s flagship camera phone for the year and the plan is to use it to document how things were before the faster Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) takes over.

Completion of the SGR will see the replacement of the old passenger train by a modern, much faster train. But the old train remains an integral part of Kenya’s history.

“We are delighted to be part of this exciting adventure as we tour Kenya with Saffir while capturing amazing photos through the lenses of CX and looking forward to future partnerships,” he said.

Tecno CX is riding on its 16 MP on both the front and back camera, and is seeking to revolutionise mobile phone photography, especially among fun-loving youth.

“Proceeds from the sale of the Camon CX also go to ActionAid to help in areas that have been hard hit by drought in Kenya,” said Mr Hou.

Saffir Africa chief executive Njoroge Nguru said Camon CX is designed with a selfie camera that can capture the moments. “Millennials in Kenya are turning to their smartphones to search, discover, document and share new experiences with their friends on social media, something that fits well with Tecno’s Camon CX,” he said.
