A World Bank-funded programme invested Sh7.3 billion in upgrading infrastructure of 50 court stations, the Judiciary said on Thursday.

The Judiciary Performance Improvement Project (JPIP) saw nine modern multi-storeyed buildings constructed to house High Court stations in Ol Kalou, Kakamega, Siaya, Nakuru, Nanyuki, Kapsabet, Wajir, Garissa and Mombasa.

JPIP said 22 magistrate courts were upgraded and eight new court stations established in various parts of the country to help improve services.

The report says 12 containers were procured for modification into six court registries for the lower courts while the rest were reserved for securing court files at the newly established High Court stations.

The JPIP project, which ends next year has provided local contractors, artisans an opportunity to earn an income and enabled local architects to come up with localised building designs.

High Court stations currently at various stages of completions cost Sh3.7 billion while the 30 lower court buildings would cost Sh3.6 billion.
The development has also reduced distance covered by litigants and security personnel ferrying suspects to court.

Some county headquarters and far-flung centres have had new court stations built thereby enabling locals access legal information and services with ease.

The JPIP procured 7,000 legal books for court libraries at a cost of Sh150 million and promoted introduction of mediation as a dispute resolution mechanism where construction projects worth Sh10 billion were unlocked by July. this year.
