Tea volume at the auction is expected to go up in the coming two sales as increased production and resumption of supplies from multinationals push up the quantities, possibly cutting the prices.

A market report from tea brokers for sale 46 and 47 indicates the volume offered for trading next week will be 9.8 million kilos and 10.1 million kilos respectively.

The volume at the auction last week was 8.4 million kilos while this week it was 8.4 million kilos.

Tea volumes have been on the rise following favourable weather that has seen production rebound after a sharp decline in the first quarter of the year when green leaf dropped by almost half.

“The volumes have been going up DUE to the good weather and increased production from the farms in the recent days,” said tea trader Peter Kimanga.

Tea from some of the multinationals was largely absent from the auction in the last three weeks as employees went on strike to demand a 30 per cent pay rise awarded by court in 2014.
