A director at Alexander Forbes East Africa won the Bungoma gubernatorial race to become the first actuary to serve as governor in Kenya.

Wycliffe Wafula Wangamati, one of Kenya’s pioneer actuaries, beat incumbent Ken Lusaka in last week’s General Election.

He is credited with helping grow Alexander Forbes East Africa schemes asset base from about Sh16 billion to about Sh180 billion in under six years.

Mr Wangamati previously served as principal consultant and actuary to the Local Authorities Trust Fund and transformed the fund to a defined contribution basis with asset base of more than Sh12 billion.

The Actuarial Society of Kenya challenged its members to vie for elective positions.

“We should prudently react to current and upcoming changes across the industry and help solve the current problems,” said James Olubayi, the association’s president.
