What you need to know:

  • Josswa Plumbers earned Sh60 million or five per cent of the total, Maha Properties Sh169 million (14 per cent) and Greenrays Energy Sh12.4 million or one per cent.
  • Another subcontractor, Jupiter Electricals, took home Sh65 million or five per cent.

Four Kenyan companies outsourced by a Chinese firm to put up 150 maisonettes at the Sh1.25 billion Runda Paradise earned Sh307 million, according to new regulatory disclosures.

The filings indicate Josswa Plumbers earned Sh60 million or five per cent of the total, Maha Properties Sh169 million (14 per cent) and Greenrays Energy Sh12.4 million or one per cent.

Another subcontractor, Jupiter Electricals, took home Sh65 million or five per cent.

China’s Nanchang Foreign Engineering Kenya is the main contractor for the first phase of the project in which each of the four-bedroom 150 units go for Sh25 million.

Each master en-suite maisonettes has a detached domestic servant quarter. It sits on a 25-acre parcel of land and the developer plans to put up a high-end hotel.

Meanwhile, the developer has announced plans to put up 80 units on a 15-acre parcel of land adjacent to a natural swamp sitting on the property that was once a coffee plantation.

National Housing Construction has welcomed such partnerships saying they help Kenyan firms acquire the necessary skills in the management of large projects as well as a track-record that would support future bids for large projects.

Director-general Daniel Manduku said no foreign contractor would be licensed to undertake any project in Kenya without showing proof of joint venture with Kenyan firms.

Some Runda Paradise owners have since moved in while others have let out to tenants paying between Sh70,000 and Sh130,000 a month.
