The government has settled Sh18 million arrears for pyrethrum farmers in Nakuru County after a 10-month delay of payment for deliveries.

The Pyrethrum Directorate released the money last month to the growers who had supplied the crop between June last year and May.

Head of the directorate Andrew Osodo said Pyrethrum Processing Company of Kenya had been running below capacity as farmers turned their attention to other crops over the delayed payments.

“We cleared the dues last month and we expect farmers will now increase the acreage under the crop,” said Mr Osodo.

He noted that the directorate is also giving farmers quality growing material as one of the ways of wooing them back to pyrethrum production.
He blamed the delayed payment on inefficiencies at the factory.
