Tea earnings fall Sh1.3bn in May sales

This was a 12.6 per cent fall compared with the same period last year according to the sector report by Tea Directorate.

The monthly report from the directorate shows the earnings in May declined to $82 million (Sh8.4 billion) against $95 million (Sh9.7 billion) realised last year.

Despite the price of tea hitting a high of Sh295 a kilo in May compared with last year’s Sh220 per kilogramme, low volumes eroded the earnings.

“The volumes were 35 per cent lower having dropped from 43 million kilogrammes last year in May to 28 million kilogrammes this year in May,” notes the report.

In the review period, 30.84 million kilogrammes of Kenyan tea was sold through Mombasa auction against 37.18 million kilogrammes recorded in the same period last year.

During the month, Kenya tea was shipped to 39 export destinations compared with 45 destinations for the same period last year.
