At least 159 Tanzanian doctors ready to work in Kenya

At least 159 Tanzanian doctors have already registered, expressing their willingness to work in hospitals in Kenya, the country's Health Minister Ms Ummy Mwalimu has revealed.

Ms Mwalimu said Kenya and Tanzania have agreed to protect the welfare of the doctors, noting that they would be paid according to the rates set by Kenya government for the profession.

She defended the decision to allow some doctors to work in Kenya, saying though there was a shortage of doctors in Tanzania, the government had the capacity to only absorb 500 from the 2,000 who are currently unemployed.

Agreement beneficial

"On involving the Medical Association of Tanganyika I would like to emphasise that the decisions were made basing on consultations between the two heads of state and we found that the agreement is beneficial,” she said adding:

"However, the important thing is that the agreement does not force anyone to go and work in Kenya.”
