The Nairobi County assembly wants asbestos roofing in all residential estates built in the 1950s and 60s replaced.

The demand comes after nominated MCA Caroline Muga had sought a report from the executive on the delay in disposing of asbestos roofing in county houses in Ofafa Jericho, Bahati and Kimathi stating that it posed a cancer risk to the residents.

Ms Muga said asbestos was banned by the national government in 2006 yet it had not been removed to date.

“There is concern that cancer cases are on the rise as Kenya spends 10 per cent of its budget to treat asbestos-related cancer cases,” said the MCA.

She added that residents collect rainwater from asbestos rooftops oblivious of the potential risks.

The MCA wants the executive to give a report on when it plans to conclude the replacement of asbestos roofing and how it enforces the ban on its use for roofing.

According to Trade executive Anna Othoro, out of the 43 markets in the county, only 10 have asbestos roofs and these are in the process of being replaced.
