President Uhuru Kenyatta has said attacks on the electoral commission officials and staff must stop, as they prepare for the repeat presidential elections scheduled for October 26.

Addressing the nation in his Mashujaa (heroes) Day speech at Uhuru Park in Nairobi, President Kenyatta said such attacks, as witnessed in parts of Nyanza and western Kenya, were a threat to democracy.

The President said the government will not tolerate chaos disguised as exercise of freedoms to create suffering in the country, noting that the law will apply to all and no one would be spared.

“The law will apply equally to all regardless of social class, political position and no one will be spared. For those who thrive in chaos and relish anarchy, your days are numbered; the law will take its course and sanction you accordingly,” said the President.

Ideals

He said those calling for some Kenyans to stay away from the polls were against the ideals that the country's forefathers struggled and died for.

He said the government was ready to counter any threats to national security during and after the Thursday election, assuring the Kenyans willing to vote that there would be enough security.

The President also urged Kenyans to be vigilant on security following the terrorist attack in neighbouring Somalia last week.

Heroes

In his Mashujaa address, President Kenyatta recognised Mary Mokaya, a student of Moi Girls High School who rescued colleagues during a fire and costing her own life, as a national hero.

“May God rest her soul and that of her colleagues, in eternal peace.  And may her name and her example of selflessness, be a shining example to us all,” said the President.

The President also recognised Joseph Charo Karisa of Rabai Sub-County, Coast region, who donated two acres of his family land for the building of a water pan to help his community end perennial water and food problems.

President Kenyatta announced thata Heroes’ Council would be established shortly, which would be responsible "for identifying and coming up with solutions to issues of welfare and support to our heroes and heroines."
