The electoral commission on Monday termed a steady supply of electricity and Internet connectivity key to its success as it manages Kenya’s most expensive elections on Tuesday.

At least 19,611,423 Kenyans are eligible to vote in the elections that will be carried out in 40,883 polling stations capped at 700 voters each.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati urged Kenyans to turn out in large numbers and to vote peacefully.

“The success of our technology-based electoral system relies on the steady supply of electricity and Internet success.

“We have been assured by the Communications Authority of Kenya, Kenya Power #ticker:KPLC and the government that these crucial services will be provided and secured during the electoral process,” said Mr Chebukati.

On the 11, 155 polling stations the IEBC has listed as not having 3G connectivity and which will require presiding officers to move to places with network coverage to send the scanned results, he said there was no cause for alarm.

Mr Chebukati said the IEBC had provided full satellite access to 17 constituencies with challenging Internet connection, all the 290 constituency tallying centres as well as the counties, making a total of 700.
