What you need to know:

  • The examination agency reckons that a certificate claiming that Mr Joho attained a C+ in 1992 was fake.
  • Gretsa University, through Vice Chancellor Kuria Thuo, confirmed in February that Mr Joho graduated in December 2016 with a degree in Commerce.
  • He is indicated as having scored B plain in English, B- in Biology and Commerce and grade C+ in Chemistry, C plain in Kiswahili, Mathematics, Geography and Social Education and Ethics.

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho scored a D- (minus) grade in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam in 1993 and not a C+ in 1992, according to a brief from the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) that will cloud the degree he received from a Thika-based university.

A copy of a letter from Knec to the Director of Criminal Investigations dated January 26 says Mr Joho sat the KCSE exam at Serani in 1993.

The letter, titled “Statement of Examinations Results, Confidential” states: “The following are the correct particulars of Ali Hassan who sat for KCSE in 1993 at Serani Secondary School, Index No. 16032063”.

The examination agency reckons that a certificate claiming that Mr Joho attained a C+ in 1992 was fake amid claims that the Mombasa governor gained entry at the University of Nairobi and Kampala International University using 1992 results.

The D- certificate will shine the spotlight on the degree he received from Gretsa University in Thika given the minimum entry grade to university remains C+.

Gretsa University, through Vice Chancellor Kuria Thuo, confirmed in February that Mr Joho graduated in December 2016 with a degree in Commerce.

He said that the Mombasa governor was a duly registered student who studied Bachelor of Commerce and specialised in human resource management through distance learning from 2014. The Knec letter indicates that the candidate got a grade D plain in English, Kiswahili, History and Government and Islamic Religious Education, scored Es in Mathematics, Physical Science, Biological Sciences and Commerce and scored a Mean Grade of D-.

The results are collaborated by school documents on a list of 16 candidates for the 1993 KCSE where Mr Joho is candidate No 8. However, the alleged forged document indicates that Mr Joho sat for KCSE at the same school in 1992 and obtained a mean grade of C+.

He is indicated as having scored B plain in English, B- in Biology and Commerce and grade C+ in Chemistry, C plain in Kiswahili, Mathematics, Geography and Social Education and Ethics.

According to an investigation report from NIS, Mr Joho was admitted to the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Commerce degree using a forged examination result slip which showed he had obtained a C+ aggregate grade.

“A forensic examination done on the handwriting and signatures appearing on the University of Nairobi application form was positive that it was actually filled and signed by Mr Joho,” says the report.

Mr Joho has been battling claims on the authenticity of his academic qualifications with several court cases being brought against him since his election as the Governor of Mombasa County.

But Joho has all along stood his ground saying that he has two genuine degrees, one from Kampala International University in Uganda and another from Gretsa University.
