Kenya is on course to create its own pool of mining professionals as the government moves to raise the contribution of the industry to the economy.

Mining secretary Dan Kazungu has formed a team to develop a framework of setting up a national mining institute for training mining professionals in Kenya.

“The terms of reference of the committee include identifying the mandate and scope of the institute, developing MoU for co-operation with other institutions and identifying stakeholders who can contribute to the National Mining Institute,” he says in a May 19 gazette notice.

Currently, the industry contributes just under one per cent of gross domestic product with most of its activities being controlled by semi-skilled artisans and foreigners.

The nine-member team that is headed by director of mining Raymond Mutiso is expected to craft a funding mechanism for the institute, propose linkages with global partners and identify research areas.

The committee members include commissioner of mines Shadrack Kimumo, University of Nairobi geology don Daniel Ichangi, Jeniffer Haiwenge and Taita Taveta University geology don Arthur Ndegwa.

Others are Benard Muchunku, Ilashir H. Mursal, Elijah Obwori and Kennedy Ndegwa.
