Kenyan firms have moved to revive commercial ties with their Ghanaian counterparts four months since the electoral defeat of President John Mahama’s administration.

The firms are planning to hold a trade expo in Ghana to build on the links that President Uhuru Kenyatta has built from 2014 when he made his first official visit to the West African nation.

While diplomatic relations have not been as robust since President Akufo-Addo took power following the December 7 elections, the new administration appears to have warmed up for Kenyan firms.

Ghana’s Minister for Business Development Mohammed Ibrahim Awal has pledged to create “an atmosphere for Kenyan businesses to thrive”, citing tax cuts on real estate sales and the abolition of the 17.5 VAT on domestic airline tickets.

“I entreat the Kenya Trade Expo Ghana to do more to encourage Kenyan businesses into the country.” Mr Awal is quoted as having told a select number of business people gathered to witness the relaunch of the Ghana -Kenya business partnership.

The team included Acting Chair of the Kenyan Community in Ghana Albert Ngumba, Co-Founder of the Kenya Trade Expo Leah Nduati Lee and Mr Carl Nelson, the Chief Operating Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre.

President Kenyatta and Mr Mahama had previously signed several pacts, among them, a bilateral air services agreement, trade agreement, MoU on cooperation in energy and oil and gas sectors.

There is also an MoU on technical, vocational educational and training reforms, among others.
