Mombasa County is exploring the possibility of introducing sea transport services on the North Coast in a bid to decongest the traffic that inconveniences motorists along Nyali bridge.

The devolved unit is also seeking investors to provide a mass transit solution via sea to connect Mombasa island with neighbouring counties such as Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu.

The move comes in the wake of worsening traffic snarl-ups in the city owing to a rise in the number of vehicles and tuktuks plying its roads over the years.

Tuktuks alone have soared to more than 10000 and are blamed for worsening road congestion in the port city.

The county's chief Trade officer Abdulwahab Mbarak says it is seeking both local and international investors to venture into sea transport as an alternative for residents to connect to other parts of the region.

He added that if private ferry services are introduced, it would make it easier for people from the town to travel to North Coast by sea.

“At the moment, we are facing problems in expanding our roads or building new ones due to lack of land,” he said, adding that it had forced the county to look into other options for travellers.

He also noted that the current ferry services only operated between the island and Likoni while there are no services between the it and the North Coast.

“If private investors introduce ferries to connect the island and north of Mombasa, it will address traffic congestion on the Nyali bridge...Our mission is to see people all the way from Shimoni in Kwale County travel to Tana River and Lamu by sea,” he said.

Years ago, the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) had proposed the extension of ferry services to connect Mombasa with neighbouring counties but to date nothing has materialised.

In Lamu, islanders depend on boat services to travel to the mainland part of Mokowe for them to travel by road to Tana River, Kilifi and Mombasa counties.

Investment portal

The Mombasa government also revealed that it is launching an investment portal to connect potential local and international financiers to available opportunities in the devolved unit.

Apart from sea transport, the county is targeting investors in commercial fishing to cash in on the resource.
