What you need to know:

  • Aspirants will have to cut all affiliations to political parties at least three months to the August 8 polls.
  • IEBC on Tuesday made clear the election rule, essentially handing a lifeline to losers in the ongoing party primaries.

Individuals planning to run as independent candidates will have to cut all affiliations to political parties at least three months to the August 8 polls, the electoral body has clarified.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Tuesday made clear the election rule, essentially handing a lifeline to losers in the ongoing party primaries.

This comes even as the Registrar of Political Parties cleared Funyula MP Paul Otuoma to contest the Busia governorship as an independent candidate.

“Anyone who intends to vie as an Independent Candidate must not be a member of a Political Party at least 3 months to the polls,” the IEBC said in its official Twitter handle.

This means that the candidates ought to have declared their intention to run as independent candidates on or before May 8, which is exactly three months to the August 8 general election.

The IEBC is required to approve the political party symbols and independent candidates’ symbols between May 8 and May 9, an indication that the commission is operating on tight deadlines.

The commission is then required to publish in the Kenya gazette names and symbols of the persons intending to contest in the elections as independent candidates on or before May 13 2017.
