The repeat presidential election planned for October 17 will cost more than Sh15 billion, Treasury Cabinet secretary Henry Rotich announced on Friday.

The minister said the Treasury was reviewing the Sh12.2 billion budget presented by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

The budget will, however, cross the Sh15 billion mark when related activities, largely security measures, are factored, Mr Rotich said.

“We are in this regard reorganising the government planned spending for this year, which we shall in due course be submitting to the National Treasury for necessary approval,” he said, during the launch of the Medium-Term Budget preparation process for 2018/19 at the KICC.

Next week

The budget will likely be presented to the National Assembly next week, Mr Rotich said.

Kenyans will be going to polls again on October 17 after the Supreme Court by a majority decision on September 1 voided the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta citing “irregularities and illegalities” in the electoral process.

The opposition National Super Alliance, which successfully challenged the outcome of the August 8 presidential vote, has insisted it will not participate in the polls unless their demands are met.

Some of the conditions include removal of key officials at the IEBC, including chief executive Ezra Chiloba, on grounds that they presided over “flaws” in the polls in “favour of the ruling Jubilee Party” and cannot be trusted again.
